Our fun and closely-knit Parks and Recreation Department is looking for a new team-member. The Town of Kennebunkport is seeking applicants for the position of Parks & Recreation Programmer. Desirable candidates are outgoing, enthusiastic, and positive, with a passion for recreational activities and youth programs. Under the guidance of the Director of Parks and Recreation, the Programmer will design, organize, implement, and supervise a wide variety of recreational activities, special events, and programs independently or in collaboration with the department staff.
A bachelor’s degree in recreation or a related subject and one to three years of progressively responsible experience in a municipal or private recreation position or any equivalent combination of education and experience is desired.
The position is 40 hours a week, with a $28-32 hourly wage depending on qualifications. Flexible hours are required for the afternoon, evening, and some weekend work. The Town of Kennebunkport is an equal opportunity employer and offers a competitive benefits package.

Parks & Recreation Programmer
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Director of Parks and Recreation, designs, organizes, implements, and supervises a wide variety of recreational activities, special events, and programs independently or in collaboration with the Director and other department staff.
Responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control. Performs varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough knowledge of departmental operations and the exercise of judgment and initiative in completing tasks, particularly in situations not clearly defined by precedent or established procedures. Incumbent is called upon to handle a significant amount of details, each varying from the other in substance and content, requiring incumbent to approach workload with flexibility. During fall and winter youth sport seasons, weekend hours will be required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Provides direct supervision to volunteer coaches, program instructors, gym supervisors, and summer day camp staff. Assists with supervision and provides general guidance and direction to all part-time program staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Town policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training and development, counseling and discipline, evaluating performance, and recommending pay increases.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s Degree in recreation or a related subject, and one to three years of progressively responsible experience in a municipal or private recreation position; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Some work is performed in a normal office environment, not subject to extreme variations of temperature, noise, odors, etc. Frequently subjected to the demands of other individuals and the volume and/or rapidity with which tasks must be accomplished.
Operates computer, printer, video display terminal, calculator, telephone, copier, facsimile machine and all other standard office equipment requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.
Some work is performed outside in all weather conditions at program sites and at other locations throughout the community. Operates recreational mini bus.
Frequent walking, sitting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and lifting are required. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motions are required. Moderate to heavy lifting and physical work are occasionally required.
Regularly exposed to hazardous physical conditions such as moving mechanical parts or electrical currents, and to hazardous materials and chemicals.
Occasionally exposed to atmospheric conditions such as weather changes and to threatening environments or people. Frequent travel is required, operating a motor vehicle.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:*
- Develops, organizes, implements, and supervises recreational programs, activities, special events, and tournaments.
- Organizes, supervises, and assists with the implementation of youth sports leagues and programs, including the development of rosters, schedules, etc. Referees games as needed.
- Organizes, implements, and supervises the administration of summer day camp and with the training of summer camp staff.
- Supports program leadership as needed. Fills in when leaders are absent, orders supplies, assists with set up and clean up, etc.
- Assists in the hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of Department coaches, staff, and volunteers.
- Assists in the Department's annual special events, such as the Zombie Dash, Love Bug Ball, Summer Concerts , Egg-Stravaganza , Christmas Prelude craft fairs, and other as needed.
- Assesses community recreational needs and plans programs accordingly. Evaluates recreational programs, activities, and special events, and makes needed adjustments and improvements.
- Communicates regularly with the public, program participants, and parents, maintaining professional working relationships. Registers the public for and gives information on programs and activities.
- Records program registration and participant information in MyRec software. Troubleshoots software technical issues within level of ability or refers issues to other staff.
- Responsible for the department social media accounts
- Maintains a professional working relationship with the Town Manager, Board of Selectmen, Recreation Committee, Town employees and volunteers, school personnel.
- Maintains professional working relationships with local businesses, contacting as needed to procure sponsorships.
- Collaborates with Recreation Departments from other Towns as needed to coordinate programs and activities.
- Assists with the development and administration of the Department's annual budget. Makes recommendations to the Director regarding projected revenue and expenses for programs offered.
- Attends and participates in all staff meetings.
- Maintains quality service by following departmental guidelines and procedures and by enforcing Town standards.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, benchmarking state-of-the-art practices, and participating in professional societies.
- Performs research, special projects, and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.
- Performs other related duties as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.
- Regular attendance at the workplace is required.

- Valid State of Maine driver’s license with no points or restrictions that would affect the Town’s liability insurance. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
- Maine Recreational Guide Certification preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the objectives and principals of a municipal parks and recreation program.
- Knowledge of the basic principles of accounting.
- Knowledge of fundraising and sponsorship.
- Ability to design, develop, and administer a wide variety of programs and activities suitable for various age groups from toddlers to senior citizens.
- Ability to evaluate, forecast, and plan for the community's needs.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to effectively deal with all members of the public, of all age groups, in a courteous and tactful manner; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with coworkers and all individuals, groups, and organizations contacted in the course of work, including diverse residents of all ages.
- Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and participate in creating a positive and constructive work environment for everyone; willingness to support and assist other staff members and to take responsibility for contributing to the success of the department and the Town.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Considerable knowledge of modern office practices and procedures. Skill in the operation and care of general office equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of business English, grammatical construction, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic, and possession of an excellent vocabulary.
- Ability to work with a high level of detail; ability to efficiently manage time and organize work; ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deal effectively with interruptions and an ever-changing schedule of duties and responsibilities.
- Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment; ability to identify and analyze complex issues and to develop appropriate recommendations.
- Ability to effectively operate computers and software necessary for the performance of job duties, including MyRec, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher, and the Town’s website.
