The City of Biddeford is looking for a highly motivated, eager to learn, team-oriented, and organized individual to serve as the Program Assistant to Camps and Cub Care for the Recreation Department, serving programs located at the J. Richard Martin Community Center and various recreation facilities in Biddeford.
The Program Assistant works under the direct supervision of two Recreation Coordinators for Cub Care & Waterfront Operations and Camps and Enrichment Programs. These divisions oversee the programmatic planning and implementation of childcare-based recreation programs essential to the community, including after care, vacation camps, and summer day camps. The Program Assistant provides administrative support to the Coordinators of these programs, works weekdays in a leadership role in programs, and is involved in other recreation programs and special events in the community.

Schedule: 36 hours per week; typical schedule will include weekday afternoons/evenings, and occasional weekends
Salary: $25.46/hour-$27.00/hour

Responsibilities
- Serves the participants and staff as a positive role model, building healthy and respectful relationships with all.
- Assists in the development and implementation of Cub Care after care and summer day camps.
- Ensures appropriate weekly activity plans and schedules have been designed by program staff and approved by supervisors.
- Responsible for the care and safety of participants and staff in related programs.
- Meets the emotional, social, physical, and cognitive needs of each child by working closely with families to develop inclusion plans regarding any special needs their child(ren) require for success in our programs.
- Supports camper behavioral issues and work with supervisors to determine disciplinary actions when needed.
- Assists in the training and development of Cub Care and Summer Camp Staff.
- Responds to public inquiries about programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings.
- Maintains open communication while communicating professionally and effectively, both orally and in writing, with a variety of stakeholders, including children, parents, staff, and supervisors
- Assists Coordinators in the planning and implementation of other recreation programs and special events both within the department and city-wide.
- Performs duties in a variety of settings including, but not limited to, offices, classrooms, indoor gymnasiums, outdoor fields, waterfronts, and field trips to different locations
- Helps prepare publications in a variety of mediums, including brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, flyers, and related communications.
- Transports equipment and participants when needed using city vehicles.
- Maintains a variety of records, including registrations, waivers and permissions, purchasing, accidents, and vandalism, etc.
- Performs miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, typing correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies needed for activities, helping set up tables and chairs for classes, etc.
- Promotes interest and provides information regarding recreation programs to school officials, other recreation officials, community service groups, other departments, and the general public.
- Availability to work afternoons/evenings and weekends.
- Assists in the recruitment and selection of part-time and seasonal staff and volunteers.
- Performs other work as required.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from a two-year college or university with a degree in recreation or a closely related field.
- Two-years of recreation experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least one-year supervisory experience in a camp or afterschool program.
Required Qualifications
- Valid state driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to coordinate and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program.
- Capacity to establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, families, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, volunteers, and the general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Knowledge and/or familiarity with:
- Basic principles and practices of community recreation
- Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment
- Principles and procedure of confidential record keeping
- Effective customer service practices
- Various games, sports, activities, riddles, songs, and arts & crafts that children will enjoy
- Positive behavior management techniques
- Water safety
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to follow and provide directions to complete assigned tasks.
- Be flexible and a team player.
