The Portland Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is comprised of 160 full-time and over 250 seasonal staff dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Portland, Maine. They achieve this by operating cultural venues, running community programs (including Before and After School, Swim Lessons, and Senior Adult programs), and maintaining public buildings, waterfront infrastructure, 70 parks, 40+ miles of trails, 13 cemeteries, and 30 playgrounds. Job Summary:
The City of Portland, Maine seeks a dynamic, experienced leader at Riverside Golf Course for the Department of Parks, Recreation & Facilities. This is a full time, year round, working supervisory position that assists in maintaining the grounds of the City owned golf courses. The Assistant Superintendent will work closely with the Superintendent on all aspects of turf maintenance and overall conditioning of the golf course. This position requires specific areas of expertise in agronomic practices, playing conditions, and improving daily customer experience. Must be comfortable executing and managing daily tasks ranging from mowing practices, turf repair, chemical/fertilizer applications, irrigation system operation and repair, daily golf course setup, and winter recreation operations. Regularly reviews course playing conditions and works with the Superintendent to determine the best management practices for turf health and playability. Identifies and corrects problems such as drainage and irrigation failures, pest and disease pressure. This position will supervise permanent and seasonal employees and work with private contractors working on City properties as needed.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Maintains appropriate records of work performed, employee time, equipment and material usage, and other pertinent data.
- Provides daily logs of work.
- Provides information as requested for weekly, monthly, and annual reports.
- Provides instruction to individuals and crews on equipment and safety in accordance with state and local regulations.
- Coordinates and assists with snow removal, ice rink maintenance, and grooming of nordic ski trails at the Riverside Golf Course.
- Assists as needed with Departmental winter operations including sidewalk snow removal, pinch point clearing, parking lot clearing, and other City-wide winter operations tasks.
- Oversees crews working winter operations as needed. Performs related work as required.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Considerable experience in golf course maintenance, and management;
- graduation from a standard high school;
- preferred completion of post secondary education in turf maintenance; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills.
- Thorough knowledge and ability to conduct golf course maintenance, drainage, automatic irrigation systems and control of fungus, weeds and diagnose and treat turf diseases.
- Ability to supervise and train personnel.
- Experience working with a diverse workforce.
- Some working knowledge of light-duty equipment such as skid-steers, tool cats, backhoes, sidewalk plows.
- Ability to use a computer and working knowledge of Google Suite and Microsoft Office software, including Excel and Word.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- Must pass a pre-employment physical assessment.
- Must have and maintain current certification in First Aid and CPR certifications or the ability to obtain within the first 6 months of hire.
- Possession of a valid Maine Commercial Pesticide License: Category 3-B; or another state’s equivalent and must transfer to State of Maine License during the 6-month probationary period.
- Must possess a valid Class C driver's license in good standing.

Salary & Benefits: Supervisors Union – Grade 28 – Weekly Salary Range $1,085.20 - $1,280.40.
