Rate of Pay: $25.75-$27.00 (based on experience)
Typical Work Week: 4-day Monday-Thursday (Parks & Recreation)
Winter months hours vary (Public Works)
GENERAL SUMMARY:
This is a full-time, year-round position. This position is under the general supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director (Spring, Summer & Fall and the Public Works Director (Winter). This position assists in overseeing and maintaining municipal parks, grounds, athletic fields, playgrounds, ice skating rinks, and equipment. This position performs daily skilled and semi-skilled routine maintenance duties, is self-directed, energetic, organized and has the capacity to prioritize projects within a budget. Winter months (approx. November-April) will report to the Public Works Director for other duties as assigned i.e., snow removal, plowing, road maintenance, shoveling, and other duties as assigned.
The work consists of operating a variety of equipment such as a pick-up truck and trailer, utility tractor with attachments and/or 3-point hitch implements, hand and power tools, lawn mower and landscaping equipment.
This position is required to perform manual labor primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions and to perform the following duties: mowing, trimming, weeding, planting, leaf blowing, ball field grooming, general landscaping, carpentry, and painting and perform preventative maintenance practices, as necessary.
Position Classification: This position is classified as a full-time, hourly (non-exempt) position.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position may occasionally supervise part-time employees and volunteers.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Must be able to work a variable schedule on weekdays, depending on the weather and demands of the season.
• Must be responsible for driving vehicles and equipment and ensure a safe and clean working environment.
• Must perform related duties as required.
• Must be able to provide excellent customer service to the public.
• Must be able to maintain an effective and positive working relationship with staff and the public.
• Must hold a Maine Class C Driver’s License and be insurable in a normal risk pool. CDL license desired but not required for the position.
• Must be able to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Must follow all departmental policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) accurately and effectively.
• Must have normal vision and be capable of using required equipment and tools.
• Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and lift to seventy-five pounds.
• Must be able to work independently and exercise good judgment when making decisions.
• Must have a working knowledge of a variety of equipment and grounds care needs.
• Must work with P&R Director to obtain estimates on equipment, labor, materials, and related costs.
• Works closely with outside contractors, including general contractors, and trades people to provide the best outcome.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Responsible for ensuring safety of self, town parks and equipment.
• Responsible for general care of equipment, supplies, and park facilities.
• Attends staff meetings and training as requested by the Parks & Recreation Director/Public Works Director.
• Ensures accurate accident reporting and concerns to Parks & Recreation Director/Public Works Director.
• Assists in purchasing equipment and supplies and records receipts and records of purchases.
• Performs maintenance and upkeep of municipal facilities, grounds and fields including, but not limited to lining, painting, mowing, watering, aerating, weeding, infield dragging, litter control, and general sprucing up. Work may include use of power tools including chainsaws, skill saws, drills, hammers, hand saws, snow blower and more.
• Performs maintenance and upkeep of municipal property including, but not limited to picking up trash, weeding, planting flowers, painting, minor repairs to fences, goals, backstops, benches, picnic tables, boardwalk, structures, and buildings as needed.
• Responsible for care, storage and inventory of all items associated with outdoor athletic facilities, including but not limited to bases, nets, goals, paint, gasoline, etc.
• Conducts weekly inspections of all parks and facilities and then records and communicates the results to P&R Director.
• Conducts inspections of all municipal playgrounds and makes necessary repairs to ensure safe operation of all elements for participants to use. Includes maintaining playground safety fall surfaces and regularly securing swing chains and seats.
• Maintains ice skating rinks including clearing paths around the rink and warming hut with a snow blower and shovel, as necessary.
• Winter months (approx. September-March) will report to the Public Works Director for other duties as assigned i.e., snow removal, plowing, and shoveling, wood chipping, and other general public work duties.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:
• High school diploma or equivalent. Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Must have at least 2 years of experience in parks maintenance, ground keeping, landscaping or equivalent.
• CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain certifications upon hire.
• Knowledge and understanding of turf management best practices.
• Playground Safety Inspection Certification or ability to obtain certification upon hire.
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Work is performed outdoors and indoors in variable weather conditions and temperatures.
• Work is performed in a moderate
to noisy environment.
• Moderate to heavy physical activity with occasional to frequent lifting of objects weighing up to seventy-five pounds and occasionally over 75 pounds.
