Job Description

The Town of Scarborough’s Community Services department is seeking an experienced, highly-motivated, talented and energetic Recreation & Waterfront Manager. This full-time 40-hour per week position is responsible for recreational programming and seasonal beach operations for the Town of Scarborough. This position develops, coordinates and supervises all aspects of recreational programming and is responsible for the day to day operations of our three municipal beaches. The Recreation & Waterfront Manager is responsible for the coordination and scheduling of all staff and volunteers related to these tasks. 

Under the direction of the Community Services Director, the Recreation & Waterfront Manager is responsible for the Recreation & Waterfront divisions and directs, manages, supervises and coordinates all the activities and operations. Key recreation, leisure, and waterfront areas include youth and adult athletic programs, outdoor activities, arts and theater, STEM programs and beach parking operations.


Successful candidates will have experience in budgeting, implementing key policies and procedures, as well as the ability to enhance programs and services while evaluating cost recovery vs “Community Good” to ensure programming is operating within the department’s mission and vision statement and core values.


Position Requirements: Bachelor’s degree required; preferably in Recreation Management or related field, and at least 3 years’ experience in the recreation field or similar setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid Maine Driver’s license and transportation, current First Aid and CPR, and Certified Parks & Recreational Professional Certification (or willingness and ability to obtain) are required.


Excellent planning, organizational and customer service skills. Must be able to coordinate various programs. Thorough understanding of recreation and experience in delivering quality programs. We are seeking a self-starter who is able to work independently, is a well-organized, positive, enthusiastic, caring individual who enjoys working with youth and adults. The candidate should be highly skilled in recruiting, retaining and training staff/volunteers. The candidate should exemplify a proactive, hands-on and professional approach while working within a team atmosphere. Starting salary range: $65,000-$71,000.
