About the Position The Town of Rye is seeking an energetic, organized, and community-minded professional to join our team as Assistant Recreation Director. This is a hands-on, full-time position that blends program leadership with administrative and front-desk support to help our Recreation Department run smoothly and serve residents of all ages. As the Assistant Recreation Director, you’ll work closely with the Recreation Director on a wide range of activities — from youth programs and senior trips to community-wide events — while also managing important office responsibilities such as answering phones, assisting residents, processing registrations, and maintaining records. This position plays a key role in ensuring our department remains a welcoming, efficient, and responsive resource for the Rye community. Key Responsibilities • Assist in the development, coordination, and management of recreation programs and community events. • Provide customer service support by answering phones, greeting visitors, responding to inquiries, and processing registrations. • Perform administrative and office duties such as correspondence, filing, scheduling, data entry, and maintaining department records. • Prepare communications including memos, letters, reports, and invoices. • Recruit, train, and supervise part-time, seasonal, and volunteer staff. • Serve as a liaison with community organizations, town departments, and residents. • Manage supplies, program equipment, and facility scheduling. • Provide hands-on assistance during programs and events — from set-up and supervision to participant engagement. • Assist with budget preparation, purchasing, and departmental reporting. • Act as supervisor in the Recreation Director’s absence. Qualifications • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation & Parks Management, Public Administration or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience). • Minimum of three years’ experience in recreation programming for all ages, special events or administrative support, including supervisory duties. • Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office and recreation registration software. • Excellent communication, organizational, and multitasking skills. • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and flexible hours as needed. • Valid driver’s license required. • CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire).

The Ideal Candidate You’re a team player who enjoys variety in your day — one moment leading a recreation activity, the next helping a resident register for a program or preparing event materials. You’re detail-oriented, friendly, and thrive in a busy environment where organization and people skills are equally valued.
